On my trip to Japan at the end of May 2023 I took many pictures. This selection illustrates some of the dramatic feeling of Tokyo. Especially once I had edited them to bring out the story in each of the images.
I hope in the future to use these skills of using colour, contrast, structure, movement and focus points to tell great stories in my games.

Shibuya crossing is Japan's most famous pedestrian crossing. The area is filled with shopping centres and adverts. The area is famous among the game community for housing the Sega arcade, until its sad closure in 2021. The area is also famous for its brightly coloured lights and billboards. To emphasise this, I increased the saturation and vibrancy of the image. Increasing the shadows and contrast made the image much more dramatic and highlights the actions of key characters in the picture. In particular, we see the green shirted figure more clearly, we see him striding and holding his head as if he is worried about getting somewhere. The clouds now look intense, moody and scary. The photo now has meaning.

With this picture of the Tokyo tower I increased the saturation to bring out the blue of the sky and increased the contrast to bring out the focus point of the top of the tower. The sharpness helps bring out each individual support pole as well as the tower-top itself.
I could easily see a player in a mystery game having to climb this tower to find something at the top. This image could be in the cut scene showing the player the extent of the tower. The Dramatic height of it is shown in picture angle which makes the player feel nervous, maybe dizzy, and excited to take on the challenge.

Glocalization is the adaptation of products to better suit the culture and environment that a product is currently in. In this example, McDonalds has edamame beans and sweetcorn as a side option, as opposed to a lettuce and tomato salad. In this photo I wanted to show the dynamic movement of people as part of a photo about fast food. To achieve this I selected a particular frame from a live photo that most showed the action and movement of people in the street and juxtaposed it with the fast food item. I saturated the colours so they looked more like the bright colours of fast food advertising.
This accuracy and attention to detail is something I feel is important games because getting this right can make the game more captivating, getting it wrong and the players can get irritated and lose interest. I want to make games which are engaging and that players can enjoy and get lost in the world.

Cropped to a linear image
Edited
This image feels to me like an adventure game checkpoint. It is very large, bright, noticeable and distinctive. The original image was interesting but lacked focus. To fix this I added drama by increasing the shadow contrast and depth. To focus the image into the important elements which tell a story, I heavily cropped it to give the image more structure. This image now looks like something you would see in Tokyo Ghoul and other horror and dark anime.
These kinds of image are all elements which I would like to include in a future horror themed narrative game.
