I think it is important to have animations in a game that show the character of the player and NPCs clearly. Detail is important as that can help players feel connected and engaged with the characters.
Walking.Â
I had to solve a number of problems with this animation. I wanted to have an animation without a background to allow me to use it with other images. I had to ensure that the colours of the left leg and left arm were slightly in shadow so that the character had some depth. This meant duplicating and flipping sections of the image. To make it smoother I also needed double the frames to ensure the shadow was always on the same leg.
This attention to detail is something I intend to bring to my game making to ensure that the player gets a great experience.
The running man action needs to be different to a walking figure. He has to bounce, his toes need to point backwards as he runs to show the foot dynamic foot movement. His head also moves with his body and rocks up and down as his foot hits the ground heavily. This man finds running difficult and a lot of effort.
In games, even in something as simple as running, I think these details can show the character of a figure even when there is very little detail in the drawing.
This animation exercise shows attention to the real physics of an object. I wanted to make this simople bounce animation as realistic as possible. It uses the classic animation technique stretch and squash to show movement.
