For the past two years I have been designing, and now selling, badges online. I faced a lot of problems which I had to solve as part of this process.
I identified that there was a gap in the market for fun, inclusive designs on badges. To solve this, I decided to create badge with a cute and popular subject that allowed as many people as possible to enjoy showing their identity in a fun and non-threatening way.
I tried an array of initial badge character designs which were not so successful. Before finally settling on a frog design which allowed a good space for the many different colours I wanted to include as well as being a cute and attractive image.
I had to create all the designs from scratch as I intended to sell them commercially and needed to own the copyright to enable me to do that.
I feel that my skills in problem-solving, attention to detail, patience and persistence are all highly relevant to game design. I was very determined to have a completed product that was inclusive and enjoyable for people to buy.
I hope to bring my sense of fairness and inclusion to games design.
This first attempt, though cute, did not have enough space when turned into a badge to properly show the flag colours.
This design's lines were too thin and the shading on the cheeks too subtle and rain shower stripes are not plain enough to show the colours clearly.
The Human Bee-ing is almost successful... it has plenty of space for the colours, but the black lines are too thin and too dark. It lacks subtlety.
Froggy is my final chosen design. They are cute, clear, fit the badge shape, print really clearly, and have a good sized space on their tummy to include the flag designs.
Froggy is selling now on my Etsy site and has been well received by everyone who has bought them.
The frog tummy has plenty of room to clearly show the flag colours and symbols.
The designs when printed and turned into badges. The frog is a pleasingly round shape which matches the badge shape.
In addition to the Froggy design, I wanted to create a badge which allowed people to show their identity without it being too obvious.
These Planet designs are a my favourite as they are very unusual and have had an excellent reception.
Most of the similar designs have the colours still in a strict order to the flags and so are still fairly unsubtle.
This design allows people to show their identity in a way which will be recognised by others within the community to which they belong.
These are my best selling designs. A simple, very carefully drawn and designed version of each flag.
I had to hand design every single flag in this series as there was no available source of good quality images that I could use.
I also resolved the issue of copyright ownership by doing so, since every design is now owned by me and I can guarantee the quality.
